Eulogy: Below is his specific thinking. There are two parts: first, thinking of entrusting the wealth; second, thinking of his own joy. This is the first. Having practiced for a long time and his path having been perfected beforehand, he is called 'old and decrepit.' His merit and wisdom are boundless, hence he has 'much wealth and property.' Although there are bodhisattvas, he has not yet converted the śrāvakas to make them succeed to the Buddha's position, hence it says 'having no son'; or because sons are few, it is also called 'having no son.' Were he suddenly to pass away, showing the entry into nirvāṇa, the treasures of the Mahāyāna would all be lost, for their capacity not yet being ripe, there would be no one to whom he could entrust the expedient and real Dharma. Therefore, his compassion being profound, he constantly remembers his son.
