Eulogy: Below is the second part: the son sees him and flees in fright. There are three parts: first, arriving at the father's gate; next, seeing the father; afterwards, turning and running away. This is the first. 'Hired' (yōng) is pronounced yú + fēng [yōng]; it also means to rent or to sell. Exerting body and mind to seek the essentials of deliverance, his mind is like a hired laborer wandering around, not his original aspiration; thus he seeks the Mahāyāna. Impelled by his lineage, he fortunately reaches the Mahāyāna, which is called 'happening to reach the father's house.' Because the seeds of the Mahāyāna sprout quickly but mature slowly, he fortunately meets it initially. Within it, further encountering the definitive Mahāyāna is called 'arriving at the father's house.' The teachings and practices of the Mahāyāna can express the principle and realize the fruit, hence they are called the 'gate.' At that time, being unable to seek single-mindedly or cultivate all practices to realize the fruit, he only knew the general aspects; listening partially to a little teaching and cultivating a tiny cause is called 'beside the gate.' At that time, not yet fully able to listen to and practice the great teaching or cultivate Mahāyāna practices, he showed that he would also listen and practice, hence called 'standing.' Resting for a brief while is called 'waiting.' Furthermore, the small capacity not having converged with the great is not called properly entering its gate. Having slight faith and practice, it is therefore called 'beside the gate.' Above, the Buddhadharma was taken as the country, within which all Mahāyāna is the city, and within the Mahāyāna, the true, definitive Middle Way Mahāyāna is called the father's house. Thus teaching and practice are called the gate.
