Commentary: This explains the arising of thoughts. The 'king' is the king of the dharmakāya. 'And the like' refers to the sambhogakāya; 'like' has the sense of resemblance. Alternatively, the 'king' is the king of the Dharma, and 'and the like' means like a worldly king. 'It is not a place where one can obtain things by hiring out one's labor' means it is not something one can realize through one's own energetic striving. The 'poor hamlet' refers to the two vehicles. 'It would be better to go there and, exerting body and mind, have a place where I can follow my inclinations': 'place' means the ground of reliance where the path is cultivated and grows. 'Si' (肆) is pronounced with the fanqie xi-li; it means to stretch out, to display. To stretch out and display one's hired labor so as to obtain the sense of following one's inclinations. Merit and wisdom can be sought, which is called food and clothing being easily obtained. If one stays long in the Great Vehicle, the Buddha might forcibly constrain and urge me to cultivate practices that are not what I delight in; this thought arose before retrogressing from the Mahāyāna. 'Qiang' (強) is pronounced with the fanqie ju-liang; it means to constrain; alternatively, it has the fanqie qi-liang or ji-liang.
