Commentary: The son fainting. In his disposition, he did not delight in the great, and he had committed no offense, which is called 'thinking myself without guilt.' Not letting me study the small, but conversely arresting me with the Great Vehicle, is called 'being seized and detained.' The austerities of a bodhisattva are indeed difficult to practice, exceeding his own capacity; fearing that they would bring him suffering is called 'I shall surely die.' His heart becoming ever more displeased is called 'becoming increasingly terrified.' Giving up his resolve and not practicing, retreating into birth-and-death, is called 'fainting and falling to the ground.' The 'ground' is the place of birth-and-death. 'Pi' (擗) is pronounced with the fanqie fang-yi; it means beating the breast. Now, since he has fallen to the ground, it properly should be written 'bi' (躄). Some also write 'pi' (僻), with the sense of depraved or crooked, which is not the meaning here.
