贊曰：釋令放意。識聲聞性遠生近熟，名知意劣。自德甚大彼怯能成，名為子難。「豪」健也。《淮南子》「智出萬人謂之豪」，亦為「𠢕」字。「難」音奴旦反，患也痾也。知有大姓，名審知子。堪當繼位、隱密潛化，名為方便。未告大眾云先我化有大乘因，言是我子。

Commentary: Explaining the intent behind ordering his release. Recognizing that his śrāvaka nature was far from emerging but near to ripening is called 'knowing his disposition was inferior.' His own virtues were exceedingly great, and the other was timid about being able to accomplish them, which is called 'a difficulty for the son.' 'Hao' (豪) means robust. The Huainanzi states: 'Wisdom surpassing ten thousand people is called hao'; it is also written as the character 𠢕. 'Nan' (難) is pronounced with the fanqie nu-dan; it means affliction or disease. Knowing that he possesses the Mahāyāna lineage is called 'knowing for certain that he was his son.' Capable of succeeding to the position, yet transforming him secretly and covertly, is called 'expedient means.' Not yet telling the great assembly that he had previously transformed him through Mahāyāna causes is called saying 'This is my son.'
