Commentary: The third section is ordering him to cultivate the aid to liberation, because of expounding the fivefold methods for stilling the mind, the stations of mindfulness, and so forth. The text has two parts: first, secretly dispatching two men; second, the two men acting according to instructions. The first has three parts: first, dispatching two men; second, ordering them to convey a message; third, projecting the dialogue. This is the first. There are in reality no two distinct entities, yet the teachings of the two vehicles were provisionally established, hence it says 'secretly dispatched.' The expedient teachings only transform the two vehicles, hence it says 'two men.' Narrow and inferior wisdom is called 'haggard appearance.' Supernormal powers that are not great are called 'lacking majesty and virtue.' Alternatively, because the teaching is one-sided, their appearance is haggard, and because the principle is deficient, they lack majesty. Or, deficient in self-benefit, they are called haggard, and with little benefit for others, they lack majesty. These all refer to the time after arousing the lesser resolve and first being taught to practice the two vehicles. The Guangya writes 'qiaocui' (憔悴); the Qieyun and Sancang write 顦顇. 'Chouyou' (愁憂) means affliction or illness; the Yupian also writes 'cui' (悴), meaning worry or injury.
