贊曰：下身近。有二：一見子，二身同。此初也。除糞已上是遠世化，解脫分滿位；見子愍已後是近世化，創教令入四善根位。異前解脫分，名為他日，況此皆是多劫脩行。分位既異，故別說時。知根未熟潛施密化，又不以大乘教被，但以二乘生空教化，故言於窓牖中，不正視故。「牖」者，導也向也。將成道時方向鹿園相見，此乃猶未是今生事，故名遙見。或由彼去聖位尚遠，亦名遙見。未得勝福，故名羸瘦。「羸」弱也。不得勝智，故名憔悴。煩惱名糞土，惡業名塵坌。「坌」音蒲悶反，塵穢也。𡋯土曰坌，苦果名污穢，合此三種皆名不淨。

Commentary: Below is approaching him in body. There are two parts: first, seeing the son; second, assuming the same form. This is the first. From clearing dung upward pertains to transformation in distant lifetimes, the stage of completing the aids to liberation; from seeing the son and pitying him onward pertains to transformation in recent lifetimes, newly teaching him to enter the stage of the four wholesome roots. Being different from the previous aids to liberation, it is called 'another day,' especially since these all involve cultivation over many kalpas. Since the stages are distinct, the times are described separately. Knowing that his faculties were not yet ripe, he covertly applied secret transformation, and instead of influencing him with the Mahāyāna teaching, he transformed him only with the two vehicles' teaching of the emptiness of persons; hence it says 'through a window,' meaning not looking at him directly. A 'window' (牖) means guiding or facing. When about to attain the path, facing the Deer Park where they met; this was not yet an affair of the present life, hence it is called 'seeing him from afar.' Alternatively, because he was still far from the noble stage, it is also called 'seeing him from afar.' Not yet having obtained superior merit, he is called 'emaciated.' 'Lei' (羸) means weak. Not having obtained superior wisdom, he is called 'haggard.' Defilements are called 'dung and earth'; unwholesome karma is called 'dust and dirt.' 'Ben' (坌) is pronounced with the fanqie pu-men; it means dust and grime. Heaped earth is called ben. Suffering results are called 'foul impurities.' Combining these three, they are all called 'impure.'
