Commentary: This is provisionally calling him father and son. First comes the statement, followed by the explanation. That my path is complete is called 'old'; that your path is weak is like 'young.' Since the feeling between father and son is keen, the intention of affectionate regard is all the deeper. Having spoken words as between father and son, why worry about distress and lack? Nor should one disparage oneself. Exclusively seeking the essentials for deliverance is called 'without deceit.' The body being constantly vigorous is called 'without indolence.' The mind being without afflictions or hatred, and words being without resentful or evil speech—this is subduing the evils of the three karmic activities. You have already been able to practice expedient, accurate contemplation to subdue afflictions; this is called 'I have never seen you have such evils.' Just like the hired laborers cultivating practices in other, non-Buddhist houses, I also have not seen you have any such evils. Unlike the hired laborers who are initial beginners among ordinary persons in our Buddhist house who have deceit and indolence, from this day forward, since you have approached the noble ones, you are no different from the noble ones who are sons begotten by me. Not yet having attained the vision of the truths, you are still not a true son; for now you are called 'like a son.'
