Commentary: Below is the sixth major section: the metaphor of showing the great while not aspiring to it. There are two parts: first, explaining the showing of the great; later, explaining the lack of aspiration. The first passage also has two parts: first, the statement; later, the explanation. The first also has two parts: first, knowing the time; later, the formal proclamation. As for 'suffering from illness': after twelve years, sentient beings' afflictions progressively increase; because sentient beings are ill, the Buddha is also ill. This was before the assembly of the Lotus Sūtra, when he knew the time of entering nirvāṇa was drawing near, and those who should be saved were all about to be saved; this is called 'knowing that his death was not far off.' All the conditioned and unconditioned virtues of the bodhisattvas and tathāgatas are called 'storehouses overflowing.' 'Overflowing' means full. Among them, the Mahāyāna has very many and the two vehicles have very few; the Tathāgata has very many and the bodhisattvas have very few; the unconditioned has very many and the conditioned has very few. 'What should be taken' refers to the myriad virtues of self-benefit; 'what should be given' refers to the myriad virtues of benefiting others. 'You should thoroughly know' means one should know all of them. Recounting his own former intent, saying 'you should grasp this intention,' is to cause him to thoroughly know the purport of the Mahāyāna and the myriad virtues of the two benefits. This refers to expounding the Great Prajñā and so forth, causing him to know and penetrate the principles of the Mahāyāna, yet not yet entrusting it to him to instruct him to generate the great aspiration; hence, he implicitly and subtly said, 'you should grasp this intention.'
