贊曰：下明不悕。有二：初領而不悕，後猶住本處。此初也。須菩提等法華會前領解空義、守護大乘，不愚於法知大乘理，然無一念發大乘心，無悕佛果大乘法食一飡之意。故前說言「不生一念好樂之心」。「悕」音虛機反，亦應作「希」，希願也。

Commentary: Below clarifies the lack of aspiration. There are two parts: first, understanding yet not aspiring; later, still abiding in his original place. This is the first. Before the Lotus assembly, Subhūti and the others understood the meaning of emptiness and protected the Mahāyāna; not being foolish regarding the Dharma, they knew the principles of the Mahāyāna, yet they lacked even a single thought of generating the Mahāyāna aspiration, having no thought of aspiring to even a single meal of the Mahāyāna Dharma food of the Buddha's fruition. Therefore, it was said earlier, 'I did not give rise to a single thought of fond liking.' The character xi (悕) is pronounced in the fanqie xu-ji; it can also be written as xi (希), meaning to hope for or aspire to.
