Commentary: Below is the second major section: the metaphor of what is attained at present. There are two parts: first, the father's entrustment; later, the son's attainment—from 'World-Honoured One, at that time the poor son' downward is this. The father's entrustment also has two parts: first, knowing that the time has arrived; second, gathering the multitude and entrusting. This is the first. 'After a short time had passed' refers to having made a little progress after the Prajñā assembly and within the Lotus assembly; hence, it is called 'gradually.' Because of understanding the two emptinesses, his intention was vast and far-reaching; this is called 'free and untroubled.' 'Free' means broad and penetrating; 'untroubled' means peaceful and secure. 'Achieving a great aspiration' means that the great mind generated in the past was born in recent times and matured over a long duration. 'Disdaining within himself his former intention' means regretting having previously abode in the small. 'Disdaining' means looking down upon with aversion; he looked down with aversion upon his former mind of cultivating the Hīnayāna. Therefore, Śāriputra said earlier: 'We all entered into the dharma-nature together. Why did the Tathāgata deliver us by means of the Hīnayāna Dharma? It was our fault, not the World-Honoured One's. I constantly reproached myself.' This is precisely identical to that.
