贊曰：下正告。有二：初牒昔，後告今，「忽於此間」下是。牒昔有三；初牒最初發心，次牒退流生死，後牒權中餘四久事。謂中途遇佛不肯脩大，化以二乘示大不悕，此即初也。二乘作佛其事極難，故自宣之不遣餘說。最初我為十六王子時，教之發大心，彼之善根我口所生，從佛法音而得生故。從佛法所生，爾乃是真生故。

Commentary: Below is the formal proclamation. There are two parts: first, recounting the past; later, declaring the present—from 'suddenly in this place' downward is this. Recounting the past has three parts: first, recounting the initial generation of the aspiration; next, recounting falling back and drifting through samsāra; later, recounting the remaining four long events during the provisional teachings. This refers to meeting the Buddha midway and refusing to cultivate the Great [Vehicle], being transformed by means of the two vehicles, and showing the great without his aspiring to it; this is the first. For the two vehicles to become buddhas is an extremely difficult matter; hence, he declared it in person and did not dispatch anyone else to speak it. Initially, when I was one of the sixteen princes, I taught him to generate the great aspiration; his roots of goodness were born from my mouth, because they came to be born from the Buddha's voice of the Dharma. Born from the Buddhadharma, only then is he truly born.
