The commentary says: Second, matching the regressive flow into birth and death. As for the three sufferings: first, the suffering of pain; second, the suffering of change; third, the suffering of conditioning. [The suffering of pain] refers to the own-character of painful feeling, as well as the faculties, objects, and associated factors conducive to painful feeling. A portion of the five aggregates is of the nature of the suffering of pain; discordance of conditions and oppressive affliction are called "suffering". This suffering is itself pain; hence it is called the "suffering of pain". That is, among the eight sufferings, the first five sufferings are all called the suffering of pain. The own-character of pleasant feeling, as well as the faculties, objects, and associated factors conducive to pleasant feeling, are capable of generating distress and grief when in a state of alteration and destruction; hence it is called the "suffering of change". Furthermore, because craving alters and destroys the mind, it is also called the suffering of change. A portion of the five aggregates is of the nature of the suffering of change; that is, among the eight sufferings, the suffering of separation from the beloved and the suffering of not getting what one seeks are both the suffering of change. The own-character of neutral feeling, as well as the faculties, objects, and associated factors conducive to neutral feeling, or at times being attended by the coarseness of the previous two sufferings and not divorced from the previous two, are accompanied by impermanence and facile fluctuation; hence it is called the "suffering of conditioning". It is not that neutral feeling alone is called the suffering of conditioning; all defiled five aggregates are entirely the suffering of conditioning. That is, among the eight sufferings, briefly subsuming all the suffering of the five grasping aggregates is entirely the suffering of conditioning. This is as stated in the eighth fascicle of the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi under conditioned arising. The various texts differ; owing to regressing and drifting, one undergoes this birth and death. Alternatively, this does not speak of the past regression and drifting, but only speaks in general terms of being oppressed by the three sufferings and undergoing various torments.
