The commentary says: Fourth, matching the conversion through the two vehicles. It has two parts: first, obtaining little by relying on the Buddha's words; second, recounting the lesser mindset that consequently took this as sufficient. This is the first part. "Contemplate" means to reflectively cultivate the contemplation of the truths. "Jian" (蠲) also means to remove. Removing the play and dung means cutting off the cognitive afflictive obstacles; exerting diligent vigor and concentrating the mind over many kalpas, one succeeds in arriving at nirvāṇa. "The wage of a single day" means that what was obtained was not much. The substance of great nirvāṇa is attained after three great kalpas and is called of immeasurable price; now attaining liberation in sixty kalpas, how could this not be the wage of a single day of nirvāṇa? Furthermore, great nirvāṇa is fulfilled in three qualities and is called of immeasurable price; now they only obtain liberation and do not obtain great wisdom or the Dharma-body; within liberation, they only obtain liberation from afflictive obstacles, not liberation from obstacles to omniscience; they only obtain liberation from fragmented birth and death, not liberation from cognitive obstacles and transformative change. How could this not be the wage of a single day of nirvāṇa? For the substance of nirvāṇa is liberation.
