Commentary: The third section below has twenty-one verses on sentient beings hearing and obtaining benefit. It is divided into three: first, nine and a half verses combine the Dharma and parables to explain that their reception of moisture differs because their dispositions are different; next, three and a half verses combine the Dharma and parables to explain that their reception of moisture brings flourishing because their causes are different; finally, eight verses combine the Dharma and parables to explain that their reception of moisture brings fruitional realization because their fruits are different. In the first text there are two: first, eight verses on the Dharma; later, one and a half verses on the parable. The first text again has two: first, one verse generally stating; next, seven verses specifically revealing. This is the first. As for "abiding in the various stages," it refers to the ten stages of the three vehicles: the stage of dry wisdom, the stage of spiritual disposition, the stage of the eight persons, the stage of complete vision, the stage of attenuation, the stage of freedom from desire, the stage of task accomplished, the stage of the pratyekabuddha, the stage of the bodhisattva, and the stage of the tathāgata. Since the three herbs are explained separately below, what is stated here earlier are the ten stages common to the three vehicles. Alternatively, it refers to the stage of ordinary beings, the stage of learners, the stage of non-learners, the stage of bodhisattvas, and the stage of tathāgatas. Or what are described here as the stages of the three vehicles are the nature without disposition, the disposition of the two vehicles, and the Mahāyāna nature; according to their levels, they are designated as stages.
