來意有四：一者上中根類聞法得記，下根之徒猶未明解，故陳過去已結大乘之緣，并說現在小果化城之喻。陳往因令其證實，述今果令其捨權，遣生覺解方可為記，故此品來。

Regarding the reason for its appearance, there are four: First, those of superior and medium faculties have heard the Dharma and received their prophecies, but those of inferior faculties have not yet clearly understood. Therefore, the Buddha relates the past karmic connection already forged with the Great Vehicle and also states the present parable of the small fruit as a conjured city. He recounts the past causes to cause them to realize reality, and describes the present fruit to cause them to abandon the provisional; only when awakening and understanding are generated in them can prophecies be conferred. Therefore this chapter appears.
