Regarding explaining the title: A place that fends off bandits and settles the spirit is called a 'city'; that which was originally nonexistent and now made to exist is called 'conjured'. 'Fending off bandits' means resting the fatigue of birth and death; 'settling the spirit' means realizing the joy of tranquil quiescence; hence it is compared to a city. The Buddha provisionally sets it up as an expedient means, so it is named 'conjured'; the city itself is conjured, so it is called a 'conjured city'. Here, both the parable and the Dharma are extensively clarified in this chapter, so it is called the 'Chapter on the Parable of the Conjured City'.
