贊曰:下釋所由。有二:初二頌明諸眾生不近善友輪迴受苦,後一頌半遇益故歸禮。此初也。「常苦」苦諦,「盲冥」集諦,「不識苦盡」道諦,「不求解脫」滅諦,於此四諦都不能識,天眾損減、從闇入闇、不聞佛名。「冥」音莫經反,暗也。《玉篇》「莫定反,夜也昧也」。「冥冥」者,蔽人目令無所見。
The Commentary says: Below, the reason is explained. It has two parts: the first two verses clarify that sentient beings, by not being close to good spiritual friends, undergo suffering in transmigration; the latter one and a half verses show taking refuge and paying homage because of meeting with benefit. This is the first. 'Constantly suffering' corresponds to the truth of suffering; 'blind and dark' corresponds to the truth of origin; 'not knowing the cessation of suffering' corresponds to the truth of the path; 'not seeking liberation' corresponds to the truth of cessation. Because they are completely unable to recognize these four noble truths, the hosts of devas dwindle, they go from darkness to darkness, and do not hear the name of the Buddha. *Ming* (冥) is pronounced *mak* + *keng*, meaning dark. The *Yupian* says: 'It is pronounced *mak* + *deng*, meaning night and obscurity.' 'Blindly dark' means obscuring people's eyes so that they have nothing to see.
