The Eulogy says: The ten and a half verses are divided into four: first, seven and a half verses praise the Buddha's virtues; next, one verse is giving rise to joy at seeing the Buddha; next, one verse requests acceptance; and the last verse is dedication of merit. In the first there are two: the first two verses state the theme; the latter five and a half verses explain it. This is the first. The first verse praises [the Buddha's] ability to extract suffering; the second verse praises his ability to grant happiness. / "Mian" (免) is pronounced wu-yuan reverse [fanqie]; it means to pull, being written as "wan" (挽). Some write "mian" (勉), wang-bian reverse [fanqie], meaning to exhort. The Guoyu says, "Fathers encourage (勉) their sons, and elder brothers encourage their younger brothers," which is like being diligent and strong. / "Meng" (萌) is pronounced mo-geng reverse [fanqie]; it means sprouts or beginnings, a murky appearance, the ignorance of the masses. The Hanshu says, "Meng (氓) means the common masses." / Nirvāṇa is called the gate of ambrosia (amṛta-dvāra); that is to say, the noble path or the principle is called ambrosia, and the teaching is called the gate.
