The Commentary says: [This shows] the quantity of those delivered. "Instructing, benefiting, and delighting" (śikṣā-samādāpana-samuttejana-sampraharṣaṇa) corresponds to what the newly translated sūtras call showing, guiding, encouraging, and rejoicing. The twelfth fascicle of the Prakaraṇāryavācā adds "causing to become free from desire"—meaning reviling conditioned phenomena to cause them to be free from craving and attachment, which is called "causing to become free from desire." Showing the four kinds of real truths is called "showing." Causing those who have already attained faith and understanding to properly accept and practice is called "guiding." If they retreat or falter, spurring them on to advance is called "encouraging." Praising their practice in accordance with the Dharma to make them rejoice is called "delighting." There is another explanation therein, but fearing it would be tedious, I shall set it aside for now. Here, four are mentioned, omitting the initial "free from desire." This and "showing" both cause them to cultivate practice, with faith and understanding being distinct; the translator was loose and elliptical, but the meaning must certainly be so. Since these are five gradual teaching methods, inferring from the meaning, it is definitively so.
