The Eulogy states: Below is the third major section of the third cycle, in which the Bhagavat speaks to verify and recount. There are three parts: first, asking the assembly whether they see him; next, from "I always praise him" onward, praising his present virtues; and later, from "You should not say" onward, discussing his past virtues. This is the first. 'Seeing' has the meaning of knowing; it is not that the assembly does not see him with their eyes, but rather that their minds do not know what his virtuous conduct is like. Furthermore, 'seeing' has the meaning of looking: 'He is standing before you; do you all look at him?' Moreover, although the assembly sees him, they may not necessarily bear him in mind; now, intending to explain his virtuous conduct, [the Buddha] asks the assembly whether they see him, wishing to cause sentient beings to observe him closely, look upon him, and listen to examine his virtuous conduct; therefore he says, 'Do you see him?'
