The Commentary says: In this there are two: the merchant leader understands the route, and [then] sets out to guide them. "Guide" refers to the Buddha, who is endowed with five virtues: first, his clever nature and keen faculties; second, his discernment that selects between right and wrong; third, his clear perception that mirrors both the ultimate and the conventional; fourth, his penetrating comprehension by which nothing is unknown; and fifth, his skill in knowing the conditions of passage and obstruction along perilous paths. "Paths" refers to the various destinies. "Passage" refers to severing the five dwellings. "Obstruction" refers to giving rise to the two hindrances. When affliction and karma are present, there is obstruction; when the causes of suffering are exhausted, there is passage. As for setting out to guide them, the meaning of the text is understandable.
