The Eulogy says: The third is understanding the setting up of the conjured city. Having retreated from the great mind, he arose to seek superior dharmas; this is called “journeying.” Consequently arriving in the Buddha-Dharma of the two vehicles is called “another country,” because it was not where he had previously grown up, and former existence in saṃsāra was called his “own country.” Dwelling within the Mahāyāna is called the “close friend’s house.” If someone has already generated the mind and is an insider to the Buddha-Dharma, they take the Buddha-Dharma as their own country and saṃsāra as another country; thus it was said previously, “long dwelling in another country for over fifty years.” Before generating the mind, an outsider to the Buddha-Dharma takes saṃsāra as their own country and the Buddha-Dharma as another country; this text is precisely that, and it also accords with what is said in the Nirvāṇa-sūtra. Or, the Mahāyāna is taken as the father’s house, and the Hinayāna as another country; seeking the taste of the true Dharma is called “clothing and food.” Exerting oneself with diligence to seek the true Dharma is called “seeking with strenuous effort and experiencing great hardship.” This is relinquishing the pleasures of the five desires while in the causal stage of the two vehicles; because of [relinquishing] these accessories of negligence, one gains a little. Not progressing further to seek the bodhi of the two vehicles, one then considers it sufficient, because the notion of having already crossed over and the notion of security have arisen.
