The Eulogy says: This directs him to take the real. “Trade” (mao): the fanqie is m- + -ou [mòhòu], meaning exchange. Trading goods uses the character mao (貿), composed of ‘shell’ (貝) and ‘dawning’ (卯); ‘dawning’ is pronounced y- + -ou [yǒu]. There are some who write it [differently], but the Yupian says: “fanqie g- + -ya [gēyǎ], a human surname,” which is not this meaning. Now following m- + -ou [mòhóu], it is not known whence that [other] character mao arose. “To trade” means using the initial small jewel to draw close to all buddhas, hearing and perfuming the true Dharma to further increase good roots, and exchanging it to take the blessing and wisdom of the upper stages of the Mahāyāna. The great wish-fulfilling jewel is a precious gem; once obtained, one can constantly have as one wishes and lack nothing, because all virtues are fully complete.
