Regarding the explanation of the title: That which can be taken as a standard and upheld is called "Dharma"; that which can be practiced and taken as a model is designated as "teacher". This teaching can serve as a standard, and this principle can be upheld—both are called "Dharma"; this Dharma can be practiced, so it is called a "Dharma teacher". Thus the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: "The teacher of all buddhas is what is called the Dharma"; the Sūtra of the Buddha's Bequeathed Teaching says: "The prātimokṣa is your great master." Within this chapter, the sūtra is praised as worthy of veneration; the Dharma itself is the teacher, hence it is called "Dharma teacher". This Dharma serves as the teacher of the Dharma, and those who can learn the Dharma can become models to instruct and fashion the masses; a teacher who possesses the Dharma is called a "Dharma teacher". Both this person and the Dharma are teachers, which this chapter broadly clarifies; hence it is called the "Dharma Teacher Chapter". Below in this chapter, both the Dharma and the practitioner are called "Dharma teacher"; encompassing both meanings is superior.
