The Buddha's emanation bodies do not rely on the light to assemble; it is solely because he wishes to make the living beings here see afar that he emits the light to illuminate them. Furthermore, if they came without being summoned, sentient beings would not know the Buddha's divine power; in order to make them know the Buddha's divine power and that what is spoken is worthy of veneration, he emits light to illuminate them. Saying "a single ray of light" represents the preaching of the Single Vehicle, with no second [vehicle] remaining. Within this shining forth of the light, there are two parts: 1. the eastern direction; 2. by analogy, the other directions. The first text has six parts; this is the first, seeing the buddhas. Question: Why is it necessary to manifest immeasurable buddhas? The Treatise says: "Because it manifests that the deeds performed by both this one and those ones are without differentiation." The buddha-deeds of both this one and those ones in teaching and transforming sentient beings are provisional first and real later, their deeds being identical.
