釋名者，「受」音植酉反，《玉篇》「容納也領也得也」。「五百」者數，「弟子」者人，「受記」者事，從三以得名。五百弟子受納佛記，記之受名受記。依主釋也。

Regarding the explanation of the title: 'Receiving' (shou) is pronounced as the fanqie zhi-you; the Yupian says: 'to contain, to receive, to obtain.' 'Five hundred' is the number; 'disciples' refers to the persons; 'receiving prophecy' is the matter; the title is derived from these three. The five hundred disciples receive the Buddha's prophecy; the reception of the prophecy is called 'receiving prophecy'. This is a tatpuruṣa compound.
