8.94

上、中不待受記，聞說而便領解；下根稟性既遲，因記方生喜意。喜意既發，方申領悟。故與前二領解不同。又下根滿慈已前領悟，五百下品記訖更申明本意，領悟深重，非時始領、先已領故。

Those of superior and middling faculties do not wait for a prophecy; upon hearing the exposition they immediately understand. The inferior faculties, being slow by disposition, only give rise to joyful thoughts because of the prophecy. Once their joyful thoughts are generated, only then do they express their understanding. Thus it differs from the earlier two kinds of understanding. Furthermore, among the inferior faculties, Maitrāyaṇīputra understood prior to this; after the prophecy was finished, the five hundred of the lower grade further stated their original intent. Their understanding was deep and earnest; it was not that they only began to understand at that time, for they had understood earlier.
