贊曰：下記。有二：初問，後授記。此初也。梵云喬答摩，此云日炙種，亦云甘蔗種。男聲中呼，佛是釋迦姓之本望也。今云喬答彌，於女聲中呼，日炙甘蔗種是佛母故，以彌聲呼。訛云憍曇彌。若毀之曰泥土種、牛糞種，故曰彌。瞿曇，姓。廣此所因，如《西域記》。

The Eulogy says: Below is the prophecy. There are two parts: first, inquiring; afterwards, bestowing the prophecy. This is the first. In Sanskrit it is *Gautama*, translated here as 'Sun-baked Clan', also called 'Sugar-cane Clan'. When addressed in the masculine gender, it refers to the Buddha, being the original lineage name of the Śākya clan. Here it says *Gautamī*, addressed in the feminine gender; because the Sun-baked Sugar-cane Clan is the Buddha's mother, she is addressed with the sound *mī*. Erroneously called *Jiaotanmi*. If spoken disparagingly as 'Mud Clan' or 'Cow-dung Clan', it is thus called *mī*. Gautama is the clan name. The extensive background for this is as in the *Xiyu Ji* (*Record of the Western Regions*).
