The commentary says: Explaining the bodily practice. Within this there are three parts: first, stating the sphere of practice and the sphere of close association; second, explaining them separately; third, concluding it, which is the final five lines of verse. While some versions of the sūtra have prose, we now adopt the verse to confirm this statement. 'Sphere' (chù) means place, which is the aforementioned dharma; it is the sphere of practice and sphere of close association upon which all practices of the three karmas rely. 'Practice' (xíng) means wandering and resting, or again, principle. As people in the world say: 'In what place do you walk (xíng)?', meaning in what principle do you move? When the preacher of the sūtra at all times constantly lets his mind wander and rest in this place, or because he settles his spiritual faculties within the place of this principle, it is called the 'sphere of practice'. 'Close' (qīn) means intimate and supportive, 'association' (jìn) means familiarizing oneself, and 'sphere' (chù) has the same meaning as before. The sphere that the practitioner's body and mind should intimately support and become familiar with is called the 'sphere of close association'. Practice refers to what is practiced internally, the practice of resting body and mind. Close association refers to external objects, what is closely engaged through external conditions. This is the coarse distinction between the two. Bodily practice has intimacy and estrangement, generality and specificity, and thus alone is called the sphere of close association; the other three are not like this. They simply obtain the general name of peaceful practices.
