The Commentary says: This is the second sphere of intimacy. Within the practice of training in wisdom, there are two parts: first, teaching the contemplation; second, concluding it. Within teaching the contemplation, first is the contemplation of emptiness, and second is the contemplation of existence; these are the contemplations of the two truths, ultimate and conventional. The contemplation of emptiness has eighteen phrases, for which there are three explanations. One explanation says: here one only contemplates the emptiness of the imagined nature (parikalpita), revealing the dharma of tathatā's signless single essence; below, the contemplation of existence only then teaches the contemplation of conventional affairs. Among the eighteen phrases, they are divided into eight categories; here there are two categories: The first three phrases rely on the three natures to reveal the ultimate. Because the subtle own-nature of the ultimate essence is difficult to know, it is revealed by relying on verbal expression. The first phrase relies on the non-existence of the imagined nature to reveal it, because both persons and dharmas are empty. The second relies on the consummate nature (pariniṣpanna). The third relies on the other-dependent nature (paratantra), because defiled dharmas are inverted, whereas the pure dharma of tathatā is not inverted. The next three phrases rely on permanence to reveal the ultimate. Conditioned dharmas have three grades: the middle grade can change and move, can decline and fail following the lower grade, or can advance and turn following the upper grade; unconditioned dharmas are not like this.
