The commentary states: The first verse is the seventh, oneself having no desires or seeking; the subsequent one and a half verses are the eighth, teaching the setting of mental thoughts. The Dazhidulun says: "With great compassion and pity expounding the Dharma for the assembly, not for the sake of clothing, food, reputation, or power, because of great compassion and because of a pure mind, one attains the forbearance of non-arising." As a verse says: / "Having heard much, skilled in wisdom and clever in words, / Beautifully expounding all dharmas to transform people's minds, / Yet not acting in accord with Dharma oneself and improper in conduct, / Is like cloud and thunder without rain. / Broadly learned, having heard much and possessing wisdom, / But halting in speech, clumsy with words, and lacking skill in means, / Unable to reveal and develop the Dharma-treasure storehouse, / Is like thunder without rain. / Not widely learned, lacking wisdom, / Unable to expound the Dharma and lacking wondrous practice, / Such a base Dharma master is without shame or conscience, / Like small clouds without thunder or rain. / Having heard much, with vast wisdom and beautiful words, / Skillfully expounding all dharmas to transform people's minds, / Practicing the Dharma with an upright mind and without fear, / Is like great clouds and thunder pouring down copious rain. / A great general of the Dharma holding the mirror of Dharma, / Illuminating the Buddha-Dharma's storehouse of wisdom, / Upholding, reciting, widely proclaiming, and ringing the Dharma bell, / Like a boat in the ocean ferrying all across, / Also like a king bee collecting all flavors, / Speaking in accord with the Buddha's words and conforming to the Buddha's intent, / Aiding the Buddha in clarifying the Dharma to deliver sentient beings— / Such a Dharma master is exceedingly rare to encounter." / If one manages to enter a sandalwood forest and takes only its leaves, or having entered the mountain of seven jewels takes only rock crystal, or if someone enters the Buddha-Dharma but does not seek the bliss of nirvāṇa, conversely seeking profit and offerings, these are all deceiving oneself. Therefore, it causes one to expound the Dharma without expectation.
