The Eulogy states: Rewarding them. There are three: first, symbolizing unconditioned merits, because the application says "granting the city of nirvāṇa"; next, symbolizing internal conditioned practice merits, such as the five faculties, five powers, and so on; later, symbolizing distinctive fruition merits, such as meditative dhyāna, liberations, and so on. These correspond in order to the three instances of the word "or" in the sūtra, matching the similes in their general aspects. Alternatively, the virtue of severance and the principle of the emptiness of persons are like fields; the ultimate emptiness of sentient beings is a house; analytical cessation in the causal stage is like a village; the analytical cessation of nirvāṇa fulfilled in the fruitional stage of the non-learner is like a city; moral shame, remorse, and patience are clothing; the five-part dharmakāya and the six constant abidings are ornaments; meditative dhyāna, liberations, and so on are the various jewels; the seven noble treasures are gold, silver, and so forth; the six supernormal powers are elephants, horses, and carriages; the wisdom of the emptiness of persons is male servants, because it can be spurred to appear before one; the eight stages of mastery are female servants, because they overcome cognitive objects; the ten totality bases and so on are ordinary subjects, because they pervade everywhere.
