Commentary: Below is the granting [of the request]. It has two parts; this is the prose section. "Don the armor of vigor": "armor" means military cuirass and helmet, which makes the mind brave, sharp, and joyful in hearing the Dharma. The mind being non-retrogressing is called "firm intention." Because the meaning is profound and remote, it is feared that they would doubt and regress. Here four powers are spoken of: First is the power of wisdom, which is the tathāgata's secret Dharma- and reward-bodies in the "Span of Life Chapter," because they are the nature and characteristics of wisdom. Second is the power of supernatural penetration, which is that supernatural penetration, the Buddha's transformation-body. Third is the power of rapid vigor, which is determination in what is to be done. *Fen* (奮) has the fanqie pronunciation *fu-wen*, meaning to raise up. *Xun* (迅) has the fanqie pronunciation *xi-jin*, or also *song-run*, meaning swift. Here we follow the latter fanqie. When a lion is about to determine what is to be done, he must first shake with swift vigor, suddenly raising the fur of his body, swiftly rousing his body, and only then acts decisively. This illustrates that I now decisively speak of the wondrous matters of the three bodies that I myself have accomplished. Fourth is the power of awe-inspiring ferocity, which is directly carrying out what is to be done, displaying all majesty to subdue and shatter, because it shatters all other unbelievers. Or again, through wisdom there is rapid vigor, and through supernatural penetration there is awe-inspiring ferocity. Or again, wisdom is the Dharma- and reward-bodies, while the lower three are the transformation-body, corresponding in order to the functions of the three wheels of supernatural transformation, mind-reading, and instructional admonition.
