Commentary: These verses versify the metaphor. As for "white hair and wrinkled face," this and the prose mutually reflect each other. The father is said to have a fine complexion and black hair, which are signs of possessing the marks and returning to youth; the sons are described as having white hair and wrinkled faces, an appearance of long cultivation yet remaining deficient. White hair has the sign of long cultivation of the noble path, while a wrinkled face bears the omen that the marks and characteristics are not yet complete. *Zhou* (皺) has the fanqie pronunciation *ce-jiu*.
