釋名者，「如來」者，法、報、化身之通名。「壽」者所受之命。「量」謂齊限。此品明三種佛身命體齊限，任法性、隨願緣、應群機、受自體。今明此三佛命之齊限，故名如來壽量品。「壽」音植酉反。「量」音呂張反，謂貶量校量佛壽量，褒貶計校籌度三佛之壽命。或力讓反，義如前釋，故名壽量品。

Regarding the explanation of the title: "Tathāgata" is the common designation for the Dharma, reward, and transformation bodies. "Life" is the lifespan that is received. "Span" (or measure) means the limits or extent. This chapter clarifies the limits and extent of the life-essence of the three kinds of buddha bodies: abiding in the Dharma-nature, following vows and conditions, responding to the diverse capacities, and receiving their own-nature. Now, clarifying the limits and extent of the lives of these three buddhas, it is therefore titled "Tathāgata-āyuṣpramāṇa Chapter" (Span of Life of the Tathāgata Chapter). "Shou" (壽) is pronounced with the fanqie zhí-yǒu. "Liang" (量) is pronounced lǚ-zhāng, meaning to evaluate and appraise the Buddha's lifespan, praising, disparaging, calculating, and estimating the lifespans of the three buddhas; or it is lì-ràng, with the meaning as explained before, and therefore it is named "Span of Life Chapter."
