The Commentary says: The fourth is the parable of delusions arising upon encountering conditions. After the Buddha was no more, afflictions arose through bad spiritual friends, intoxicating their minds; this is called drinking another's poison and rolling and writhing on the ground of birth and death. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: / "Poverty-stricken and without rescue or protection, / Just like critically ill patients / With no physician, following their own desires / And consuming what ought not to be consumed; / The disease of sentient beings' afflictions / Is constantly harmed by all false views; / Having distanced themselves from the physician of the Dharma, / They ingest deviant poisonous medicine." / Although both those with mature and immature faculties give rise to delusions, those whose faculties are immature have heavier delusions and regress with the stream, whereas those whose faculties are already mature have lighter delusions and cultivate practice.
