釋名者，「提婆」天也。「達多」授也。佛之黨弟、斛飯王之子，從天乞得、天授與之，故名天授。

Regarding the explanation of the title: 'Deva' is 'heaven.' 'Datta' is 'given.' He was the Buddha's paternal cousin, the son of King Droṇodana; prayed for and obtained from heaven, heaven bestowed him, hence he is named Tianshou ('God-given').
