The Commentary says: In this there are three parts: first, features of the land; second, offerings; third, freedom from fear. The transformation land is filled with anxiety, fear, suffering, and distress; the pure land is free from them. Among the features of the land there are material phenomena and there are virtues, just as in the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa: gardens of dhāraṇī, forest trees of the Great Dharma, and so forth—all should be understood according to this standard. The meaning of the pure land is as explained in a separate chapter. The Treatise says: "That my pure land is unruined while the multitude sees it burned up is because the true pure land of the reward-buddha Tathāgata is subsumed under the ultimate truth, unlike the transformation land which is subsumed under conventional truth." The word "le" (樂) has two pronunciations: first, the fanqie of lu and ge (lè), meaning free enjoyment; second, the fanqie of wu and jiao (yào), meaning roaming in superior places that can give rise to joy and delight.
