Regarding resolving objections: For what reason did the śrāvakas, upon hearing the real and provisional, awaken and understand, and were then conferred prophecies, while the bodhisattvas, upon hearing the true and transformed, understood and knew, yet were not conferred prophecies? Answer: Prophecies for the bodhisattvas had already been frequently revealed by the Buddha; here he merely spoke of the causal realization and did not speak of the future fruition. For the śrāvakas newly awakened, performing buddha-works is difficult; since their causal realization was not yet accomplished, he provisionally conferred prophecies of future fruition. Question: For what reason, when speaking of the provisional and real of the vehicles, did the bodhisattvas lack both prophecy and realization, and when speaking of the true and transformed of the bodies, were the śrāvakas deficient in both prophecy and realization? Answer: The bodhisattvas already knew the provisional and real beforehand; merely hearing of the bodies, they realized the path. The śrāvakas had not yet realized the transformed and true; only by hearing of the vehicles did they attain prophecies. Bodhisattvas have no grasping and abandoning, whereas śrāvakas have not yet attained realization. Question: The initial division stated: why is expounding the provisional and real to prophesy for the śrāvakas taken as the central tenet, while expounding the true and transformed to bring realization to the bodhisattvas belongs to the dissemination? Answer: The opening and guiding of the Lotus Sūtra directly sets forth its central tenet in contrast with the provisional and real; it does not speak of the true and response [bodies]. How could speaking of the bodies be taken as the central tenet? It merely resolved the doubts of that assembly on the basis of the preceding 'Springing Forth', and was not the primary aim of the opening and guiding; hence it is not the central tenet.
