The commentary says: Below, he praises the rarity of generating benefit. When some buddhas appear in the world, they preach only one Dharma or do not preach the Dharma; now he expounds the three vehicles, and thus it is called rare. "Ying" (應) has the fanqie pronunciation yu + xing, or yu + zheng; it means fitting or accordant: preaching the Dharma to accord and fit their capacities, because faculty and Dharma correspond to one another. The dispositions of sentient beings have inferior, intermediate, and superior grades. Those who generally understand the four truths as causes and effects of defilement and purity, being the most inferior, are named as obtaining [the fruit of] a śrāvaka; those who generally understand the causes and effects of the twelve links of conditioned arising in samsara, being next superior, are named as obtaining [the fruit of] a pratyekabuddha; those who can practice the two benefits, knowing both the general and the particular, cultivating the six perfections, and ultimately becoming buddhas, are named bodhisattvas, who will achieve omniscience. "Pratyekabuddha": here translated as solitary realizer, abbreviated as pratyekabuddha.
