Third, 'to awaken' means 'the meaning of not knowing', because all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas do not know that true place. 'Not knowing that true place' means they do not know that ultimately there is only the Single Buddha Vehicle. As stated below: 'It is like a person who visits a close friend's house, falls asleep drunk, and [the friend] ties a priceless jewel into his robe... At first he is unaware of it, and only later awakens to know it.' The meaning of this is that the two vehicles do not know that ultimately there is only the Single Buddha Vehicle—the essence of which is bodhi and the four wisdoms—and therefore do not cultivate the complete Sambhogakāya. The Buddha appears in the world desiring to make sentient beings awaken to the fact that ultimately there is only this Single Vehicle of the Buddha's bodhi wisdom, and to cause them to cultivate and develop it.
