The general and specific fruitions and causes explained above were used to interpret the four kinds. According to the Dharma of the buddhas of the three times below, the initial 'opening' is not mentioned, and only 'showing, awakening, and entering' are spoken of. Therefore we know that only explaining it in this way is good, because 'showing' and 'awakening' separately reveal the two fruitions completely and there is no need to set up [a general opening], for citing these two encompasses all conditioned and unconditioned myriads of virtues of the Buddha. In this 'Expedient Means Chapter', the Dharma expounds the Single Vehicle only for those of superior faculties, and thereby generally discerns bodhi and nirvāṇa, whether as cause or as fruition, as the Single Vehicle. In the 'Parable Chapter', for those of medium faculties, only 'awakening' is spoken of: the ox cart, bodhi, and the virtue of wisdom as the Single Vehicle, because they are deluded only about the cause-wisdom, not about the cause-principle or fruition-wisdom and principle. In the 'Conjured City Parable Chapter', for those of lower faculties, only 'showing' is spoken of: the treasure house, nirvāṇa, and the virtue of abandonment as the Single Vehicle, because they are deluded about the fruition-principle, not about the fruition-wisdom or cause-principle and wisdom; according to what is appropriate, their obscurations are severed, causing them to enter by exclusively speaking of the Single Vehicle. Or for those of medium and lower faculties, the two doors of cause and fruition, wisdom and principle, are alternately spoken of, reflecting each other to cause them to understand. Only this single chapter comprehensively clarifies cause and fruition, awakening and quiescence, as the Single Vehicle, with principle and meaning complete and fully prepared; therefore in the root treatise, this chapter is explained in full, while the remaining chapters only summarize their general meaning as not differing from this; if one understands this chapter, one then understands the entire work. However, examining the text below, the ox cart is in the fruition, which is bodhi; the text below only clarifies the wisdom in the cause, because the three vehicles ride this to reach the place of enlightenment. Moreover, although the principle is thus, in many sūtras and treatises the wisdom of the nature and principle of nirvāṇa is spoken of as the Single Vehicle, for it is the root of the Single Vehicle, as in the Anantanirdeśa-sūtra.
