In explaining the name: "Vehicle" (yāna) has the meaning of carrying and conveying. Thus the Guangya says, "To ride is to convey," and the Rites of Zhou says, "To ride is to carry," because it carries and conveys practitioners to the other shore. Thus this sūtra says: "Riding this jewel carriage straight to the place of awakening." The Mahāyānasaṃgraha also says: "The six pāramitās and myriad practices are both a vehicle and great; the dharma-nature, tathatā, is the great nature that is ridden. Both phenomena and principle are able to carry and convey practitioners; conveying oneself and conveying others to reach the other shore are both named a vehicle."
