The Commentary says: The second is the marks of the father that he saw. ‘Within the gate’ means principle abiding within the teaching, and fruition being within the cause. Formerly, looking toward saṃsāra, he was called ‘dwelling outside the gate’; now, looking toward nirvāṇa, he therefore ‘dwells within the gate.’ ‘Calculating the gold and so forth’ means the noble ones composing treatises to discriminate and calculate the noble wealth of Dharma. ‘Disbursing and taking in property’ means practicing the two benefits. ‘Recording them in account registers’ means the various masters writing commentaries, compiling textual records, and so forth. Zhu is pronounced with the fanqie ding-zhu; it means to record or annotate. The Qieyun says: ‘Zhu is pronounced with zhi-shu, meaning water pouring, not annotating.’ The Guangya says: ‘Zhu is also pronounced with zhi-yu, meaning commenting, noting, and explaining.’ The Tongsuwen says: ‘Recording things is called zhu.’ Here it is also written as zhu.
