The commentary says: Below, the twelve links of dependent origination are clarified. These comprise affliction and purification; both affliction and purification have forward and reverse contemplations. Herein there are two aspects: adducing the forward contemplation of affliction and the forward contemplation of purification exemplifies the reverse contemplation of affliction and the reverse contemplation of purification. This is the forward contemplation of affliction. Since birth and death give rise to one another, it exemplifies the reverse contemplation of affliction.
