The Commentary says: Below, he resolves doubts and objections. That is, there is an objection saying: If all śrāvakas are to become buddhas, those who meet the Buddha and receive the Buddha's teaching may indeed abide in buddhahood; but after the Buddha's extinction, if there are those who seek to be śrāvakas, who do not hear this sūtra, who are unaware and ignorant of the vast and extensive bodhisattva practice, and who, regarding the two merits of conditioned and unconditioned that they have realized themselves, form the notion of extinction of nirvāṇa with residue and seek to enter nirvāṇa without residue—how could such people attain buddhahood? Therefore, below he resolves it. The text has three parts: first, restating the questioned persons; next, explaining that they too will become buddhas; later, explaining the reason. This restates the śrāvakas who are questioned.
