Saying that 'they hear the sound, cling to it as real, and slander, claiming there is no Mahāyāna' is based on the ordinary persons of the past who, upon first hearing the small teaching, clung to it as ultimate, claiming there is no Mahāyāna. Having never heard the Mahāyāna expounded, they gave rise to slander; this is the slander of diminution. Thereupon, relying on cultivating the small, they took it to be ultimate: 'I shall ultimately attain such nirvāṇa.' Now, hearing the Mahāyāna, they believe and do not slander, but merely assess that they have no share in it and cannot advance in cultivation. Since they hear that there is only one [vehicle], they then suppose that no śrāvakas attain extinction, and turning away from the path, doubts arise; therefore it is named diminution. Hence a subsequent passage states: 'If there are disciples of mine who have truly attained the status of arhat or pratyekabuddha, that they should not believe this sūtra is impossible.'
