1.42

六欲說三種法門：一根本法輪，二枝末法輪，三攝末歸本法輪。佛初成道為諸菩薩說《華嚴》等根本法輪。薄福鈍根不堪聞故，說二乘教為枝末法輪，四十餘年說三陶練，今此法華方會歸一，即攝末歸本。

Sixth, wishing to teach three kinds of Dharma-wheels: 1. The root Dharma-wheel; 2. The branch Dharma-wheel; 3. The Dharma-wheel that gathers the branches to return to the root. When the Buddha first attained the Way, he preached for all bodhisattvas the root Dharma-wheel such as the *Avataṃsaka*. Because those of meager merit and dull faculties were unable to hear it, he preached the teaching of the two vehicles as the branch Dharma-wheel, training and refining them for over forty years. Only now, in this *Lotus*, does he assemble and return them to the one; this is gathering the branches to return to the root.
