〈信解品〉云：遙見長者踞師子床羅列寶物，即指《華嚴》為根本教。喚子不得，遣二人，脫寶服、執糞器、著弊衣、宿草庵、假稱子，為枝末教。為會親族集付家財，攝末歸本。

The "Faith and Understanding" chapter says: "Seeing the elder from afar sitting on a lion throne with precious things arrayed"—this refers to the *Avataṃsaka* as the root teaching. Being unable to call his son, he dispatched two men, took off his precious robes, held a dung vessel, put on ragged garments, lodged in a grass hut, and falsely called him son—this is the branch teaching. Gathering his relatives to assemble and entrust the family property—this is gathering the branches to return to the root.
